What is a PADI Five Star IDC Centre?
A PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre
(5 Star IDC) is a dive centre that not only meets all 5 Star
Dive Centre standards, but also offers PADI Instructor-level
training. A PADI 5 Star IDC offers dive consumers programs
to fulfil their educational goals from entry-level training
up through instructor-level certifications.
WHAT IS PADI?
PADI (Professional Association of Diving
Instructors) is the world's largest recreational diving membership
organization. The membership includes dive businesses, resort
facilities, academic institutions, instructor trainers, dive
educators, divers, snorkellers and other water sports enthusiasts.
Professional PADI Members (dive centres, resorts, educational
facilities, instructors, assistant instructors and divemasters)
teach the vast majority of the world's recreational divers,
issuing nearly 800,000 certifications each year. PADI Professionals
make underwater exploration and adventure accessible to the
public while maintaining the highest industry standards for
dive training, safety and customer service.
The PADI System of diver education is based
on progressive training that introduces skills, safety related
information and local environmental knowledge to students
in stages. PADI courses are student-centered and provide for
maximum practice and application. Students learn the basics
through independent study and are guided through additional
development by their instructors. The goal is to get students
in the water as soon as possible and provides them with the
instruction necessary to gain confidence in their diving abilities.
The PADI Instructor Development program sets
the industry standard for instructor training. Through a comprehensive
curriculum, dive leaders build upon their supervisory skills
and learn to teach PADI courses. Each new PADI Instructor
has demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the PADI System and
the ability to conduct PADI programs by meeting specific evaluation
criteria during a PADI Instructor Examination (IE). PADI Instructor
Development programs may only be conducted by qualified PADI
Course Directors. Course Directors are experienced Master
Instructors who have received training and gained experience
in conducting instructor development programs. PADI Instructor
Examinations are conducted by a select group of Instructor
Examiners who are under contract with PADI. Having IE conducted
only by authorized examiners ensures that the evaluation process
is objective, fair and consistent.
All PADI programs, entry-level through instructor
training, fall under strict educational standards to maintain
worldwide consistency and quality. PADI takes a proactive
approach to quality assurance, with a full-time department
that randomly surveys PADI divers to monitor PADI programs
and to confirm that they meet PADI's high standards. The commitment
to a strong quality assurance process helps maintain credibility
and continually improve customer satisfaction.
With thousands of members and millions of
divers, PADI-sponsored programs are becoming a growing force
in the worldwide effort to preserve the underwater environment.
Project AWARE (Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and
Education) encompasses PADI's environmental awareness and
protection philosophy. Through their training, PADI divers
learn the importance of protecting fragile aquatic ecosystems
and are encouraged to become involved in preservation efforts.
Learning how to scuba dive is your ticket to the ultimate
underwater adventure. The scuba certification that you earn
is internationally recognized, never expires, and allows you
to rent or purchase your own diving equipment. You'll soon
discover, however, that there is no shortage of dive companies
out there competing for your hard earned cash. It can be a
daunting task trying to find one that has a proven track record
of honesty, integrity, and reliability, while at the same
time providing a positive certification experience for both
you and your family.
To help you comparison shop, I've compiled
a list of questions any potential certification student needs
to ask before getting certified. (There are a number of different
scuba training organizations that a dive company can be affiliated
with. This article deals primarily with certification courses
sanctioned by PADI: Professional Association of Diving Instructors,
the largest scuba training organization in the world).
How Long Does The Certification Course Last?
Scuba certification is performance based,
meaning there is no set amount of hours required for completion.
You move from one level to the next during the course at your
own pace. You will find that most PADI certification courses
advertised are based around an estimated 3 day time frame
for completion. For the average person, however, this may
not be enough time. 4 days for certification is a much more
realistic goal. 95% of our divers complete there courses within
the three day period.
2. How Much Does The Certification Course Cost?
Lowball prices are designed for 2 reasons....
to attract your attention, and to get you in the door. The
hidden charges for the course, such as books and equipment
rental and the PIC, are conveniently never advertised. Look
for an all inclusive certification course experience. Remember,
in the end, you always get what you pay for. Easy Divers offers
all-inclusive pricing. No Hidden EXTRAS.
3. Are References Available From The Most Recent
Students?
Always ask for phone or E-mail references
from the most recent certification students who have just
completed the course. Don't settle for written quotes that
are years old and taken from some database of generic customer
comments. If a lame excuse or noncommittal answer is given,
take your business elsewhere. A quality dive operation that
has nothing to hide will be happy to provide such references.
Easy Divers and many of our instructors have been awarded
the Padi Certificate of Excellence. For outstanding customer
service and professionalism.
4. Who Is The Instructor?
5. How Long Have They Been An Instructor?
6. How Many People Have They Certified?
7. How Many Certification Courses Have They Taught?
Good instructors, who have an extensive resume of experience teaching scuba certification courses, are extremely hard to find. Dive shops have a notoriously high turnover ratio of scuba instructors to staff. You find that Instructors who work for the same company year after year are dedicated and have a good working relationship with the dive school too. Many of the ones who are there are recent hires, and have very little real world experience. They also work long hours for very little money, generally getting paid by the activity, not by the hour.
Insist on someone who has certified at least 25 people, and has been teaching a minimum of one year. The PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) could be one sign that your instructor is continuing his own career, denoting a possibly good instructor.
8. Is The Instructor First Aid/CPR Certified?
While PADI doesn't require its scuba instructors
to hold these important certifications, any instructor who's
serious about teaching a certification course needs to go
the extra mile and make this a requirement, not an option.
All our Instructors at Easy Divers Cyprus are trained to a very high standard and
must be a CPR/First Aid Instructor. We hold a very high quality
and service; this is why our divers come back year after year.
9. Will The Course Be Taught Using Rotating Instructors?
This is a common practice for some dive operations, where one instructor "Team Teaches" the course with another,
exposing you to differing personalities and teaching methods
that will only confuse you. Unless you are doing a referral
certification, where you are starting and finishing your course
in different locations.
10. Will Both Instructor And Student Use Similar
Equipment Setups During The Course?
When both instructor and student are using
the same brand of scuba gear, and have similarly designed
equipment configurations, it allows students to learn faster
and easier, both in and out of the water, during the certification
course.
11. Will The Course Incorporate A Giant RDP, Interactive Multi-Media
e-RDP Into The Academic Sessions?
Learning how to use the dive tables is perhaps the toughest academic challenge a student faces during the certification course. A quality dive operation will have available a giant version of the standard dive table, allowing students to more easily master this important academic information. When we teach your course, we use the latest media presentation tools to help you understand the theory of diving. We know how important this is to you. We have a large 42" Plasma Screen so you can see every detail of what you need to know and understand.
12. Can I Get A Student Discount After Getting Certified?
Any reputable dive operation should give
you a generous student discount towards future diving activities
and/or equipment purchases you make from them, in appreciation
for taking their certification course.
After successfully
completing your course, we offer you a generous discount on
further dives and our fantastic range of our diving and snorkelling
equipment. The high quality of our new rental gear and our
vast selection of equipment for purchase is unsurpassed in
Protaras. Please check out our Diving Packages where you could save money diving.
These are just some of the standards for your own safety and well being. At Easy Divers, we adhere to PADI Standards, European Standards and local laws.
